WHIT2   Essential Supplies


The Challenge       Lend a hand

Amidst the cost of living crisis, many young carer families are reliant on food banks. This Challenge is to provide ten young carer families with food hampers. These parcels will provide a family with essential food supplies to relieve the strained family budget, especially during the school holidays when access to free school meals does not apply.

Kids Young Carers

The Fareham and Gosport Young Carers project supports young carers aged between 8 - 18 years old, by way of support clubs and respite trips. The young carers may be caring for a family member who has a disability, learning difficulty, mental health and/or substance misuse issue.

WHIT3   Go Ape


The Challenge   Entertainment

This Challenge is to take a group of 15 young people who are part of the Children of Substance Misusing Others (Cosmo) support group to GoApe! You are invited to attend on the day, along with the Cosmo youth workers. You will work with the charity to buy entrance tickets. The price is currently around £20 per person for a group of ten at a time. One adult is required to be on the course with every four young people (under 13). Over 13's but under 16's can be supervised from ground level at a ratio of 1:8 adults to young people. If you are able to arrange transport with the budget, that would be helpful. If not transport can be arranged from their Advice Centre on Southampton High Street.

No Limits (South)

No Limits works with vulnerable children and young people in Southampton and the whole of Hampshire. They provide support for a wide range of issues, including mental health, homelessness, relationships, issues faced by young carers, young parents and more.

WHIT4   You'll Never Walk Alone


The Challenge   Lend a hand

The Challenge is to purchase refreshments to the supporters at their Flagship Walk fundraiser, which will take place on Saturday 7 September from 6:30pm (date tbc). You will work with the charity to provide much needed refreshments for those taking part. They would also love volunteers on the day to help serve the refreshments and help marshals along the route of the walk, cheering on the supporters. This event brings the local community together to remember their loved ones, whilst raising much-needed funds to support local hospice care.

Rowans Hospice

Rowans Hospice provide palliative and end of life care of the highest quality for those living with a life-limiting illness in the South-East of Hampshire. Their highly trained hospice carers help to improve quality of life for the patient by easing physical symptoms, as well as offering psychological, spiritual and social support to both patients and their loved ones.

WHIT5   Especially For You


The Challenge      Lend a hand

Your job will be to make up mental health care packs for local children, who are struggling with their mental health or who have experienced trauma. They would like you to include things like cuddly toys, arts and crafts for younger children and pamper gifts for the older kids. You will be fully guided by the charity on what items to purchase. This is a nice challenge for those who like shopping, followed by an afternoon in the office making up the packs ready for delivery.

Spotlight UK

Spotlight UK has been providing free and highly subsidised activities for children and families, mental health care packs and Christmas presents for the last 15 years. They work with children from vulnerable and disadvantaged families. They cannot take away the past but they can create new positive memories!

WHIT6   Service Please!


The Challenge   Lend a hand

Lifehouse would love a team of up to six people to help make and serve hot, free, breakfast/brunch to 80 guests, as well as 40 takeaways and 90 compiled food parcels! You will spend the morning setting up for the breakfast service, laying tables, setting out cutlery etc. You will then be either manning the tea and coffee station, making toast, or serving the breakfasts that come out of the kitchen. They would also welcome some items using the budget, such as tins of soup, Pot Noodles, body wash, shampoo, mens socks and pants and takeaway coffee cups! Project photo >

The LifeHouse

The LifeHouse is a free food kitchen, resource and support centre that serves hot food in Albert Road, Southsea. They open every week for hot breakfast / brunch on Wednesdays and dinner on Thursdays. Many of their users are facing desperate situations, but whatever the circumstances, there is always hot food and support at Lifehouse for them.

WHIT7  Look Who's 40!


The Challenge   Entertainment

Balloons imageThis year, Brendoncare will be celebrating 40 years of caring. They would be delighted if you could host a summer party at their Gosport Hub. You will be responsible for planning of the party, purchasing the decorations, food and entertainment (ideas such as music, games, quiz, photobooth). As Brendoncare was founded in 1984, the celebrations could have a fun 80's theme! On the day, you will help with setting up, decorating the hall and outside, chatting to members and manning the BBQ. After the party, you can help with tidying up. This is a great challenge for a large team who don't mind getting stuck in. Suggested dates by the charity are Monday 8, Monday 22 or Monday 29 July.

The Brendoncare Foundation

Brendoncare is a registered social care charity, supporting older people at different stages of their life. Their vision is to transform the culture of ageing by empowering people to live well, through the provision age friendly places and services.

WHIT8  Thorpe Park Fun


The Challenge   Entertainment

You are tasked with making a memorable day out for ten young people who have little, to no, disposable income for luxuries such as social activities and days out. A small team is needed to provide a day out to Thorpe Park for supported young people and accompanying staff. Your job is to source entrance tickets, support with travel costs and packed lunches for the ten young attendees. If you are free, and would like to join on the day, two volunteers would be very welcome to join the group.

Step by Step

Step by Step supports young people facing homelessness across, Berkshire, Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex, Wiltshire and Dorset. The young people supported by Step by Step have multiple, complex needs and vulnerabilities, including drug/alcohol abuse, offending, learning difficulties, mental health issues, family breakdown, poor education attainment. As well as accommodation and support, Step by Step add a wealth of wellbeing services, tailored to a young person's needs, wants, talents and aspirations, building a path to lasting stability and independence.

WHIT9   Pampering the Premises


The Challenge    Gardening

The challenge is spend a day tidying up the back and front of the day centre premises. The front of the building is very overgrown with bushes. The back has a small, slabbed area, which would be a fantastic place to have new planters and to grow herbs. The fence at the back is looking a bit tired and could do with repairing and painting. This space could be painted blue and white to give a nice bright and welcoming feel for the users. In the warmer weather, the service users use the back slabbed area to stand in to get fresh air, so it would be great to have a weather proof bench or seating that they could use. Headway, Southampton

Headway Southampton is an independent charity, supporting adults with an acquired brain injury (ABI) in Southampton, New Forest, Eastleigh, Winchester, Romsey and part of Fareham. They also offer advice and rehabilitation services. Their mission is to improve the lives and promote the independence of local ABI survivors by providing support and advice to their families, friends and carers and raise awareness of the life changing effects of brain injury.

WHIT10   Rowans Ride


The Challenge    Virtual project

Rowans Hospice will be hosting a virtual Rowans Ride event, to help raise money for local hospice care. Your job will be to source the medals, water bottles and/or cycling jerseys for the event. They are also looking for volunteers to help, in person, on the last day of the event. They will be holding a celebratory finish line event at their Living Well Centre on Wednesday, 31 July 2024 (date to be confirmed by the charity).

Rowans Hospice

WHIT11 Every Little Helps


The Challenge   Lend a hand

Yellow Door's clients are struggling with the cost of living, some not having enough money to cover the basics they need, such as food and toiletries. The Challenge is for a team to work together to compile food hampers, containing non-perishables, toiletries, household items and treats for their clients and their families. Use your budget to create as many hampers as you can! On delivery, Yellow Door would be happy to give you a short 30 minute talk and tour, bringing to life what they do.

Yellow Door

Yellow Door is a Southampton based charity, providing a range of prevention and support interventions to those affected by sexual and domestic abuse and other forms of interpersonal harm or discrimination, across Hampshire.

WHIT12 Old School Summer Fate

The Portsmouth Day Opportunities Centre would like to run a summer fete, with stalls, a bouncy castle and games. You and your colleagues will work with Minstead to help organise the day. You will also be needed on the day to help out with the fete and run the games area for the children. This is a great opportunity to engage with their service users. The date is not currently decided, but it is likely to be on a weekday, over the summer. Project photos >

Minstead Trust

Minstead Trust provides everyday support and employment training to people with learning disabilities, helping them overcome barriers they face, to live more independent and fulfilled lives in Hampshire. Everyone they support will need some level of support for the rest of their lives. They believe that people with learning disabilities have something to offer the world and they deserve to be a part of it.

WHIT13  Sitting in the Trees


The Challenge     DIY icon

Picnic benchMinstead are in need a circular tree seat for the courtyard at their New Forest Day Opportunities Centre at Minstead Lodge. They also would like two 2-metre tall acers. The courtyard needs cheering up, so when the users take their coffee breaks, they have somewhere nice to sit.  You will be sent a the link for the circular tree seat which you will need to purchase and arrange delivery of this along with 2 trees. You will then spend a day onsite construct the tree seats and place the trees and arrange them in the court yard. Like being outdoor in nature? this is for you!

Minstead Trust

WHIT14  A-Lotment of Help


The Challenge  Gardening

 

The charity has four allotments and a greenhouse that keep them busy all year round. There is always something that needs to be done! They would really appreciate volunteers helping at the site with tasks like digging, clearing, planting direct into the ground and into pots. If you take on this challenge later in the season they will need your help with harvesting. This challenge is a great way to interact with the service users and hear how the support has been transformational!

Footprints Project - the vision is to encourage self-worth, nurture hope and bring a sense of belonging to people in Hampshire and Dorset who have been affected by the criminal justice system, building stronger, safer communities.

WHIT15   Cooking Up a Feast


The Challenge   Lend a hand 

The challenge is for Zurich volunteers to support a cookery sessions for 4-6 residents at a time. Each volunteer will be paired with service users and take part in the session helping prepare a shared meal for all to enjoy together. These session are so important for residents who can be isolated and have little social interaction with the community, this can also cause problems with their mental health. The sessions are always well attended and they help residents feel accepted by their community and learn a life skill. If you and your colleague would like to lead the cookery session and prepare the meal plans that would be fine. Alternatively staff at Footprints can organise this for you. These sessions take place in Waterlooville and Fareham and run on a weekday.

WHIT16   Fun in the Sun 


The Challenge   Entertainment

A team is required to volunteer for a day, during the summer holidays. The day starts at 8:45am with a team briefing covering activities and information on special needs for any children within your group (asthma, eczema, etc.). This will be followed by morning activities, an hour for lunch on the field, afternoon activities and then a team debrief ending at 4pm. More volunteers means they can give more attention to each child, ensuring that they have a fantastic and enjoyable day. You will be placed with a senior play lead to look after a team of children aged 5-11, through their activities for the day. You will be supplied with a free catered lunch! DBS checks are required for this challenge and the charity will organise these for you.

North End Playscheme

North End Playscheme has been running for over 30 years. It will be set up in  Mayfield School for a week during the summer holidays, to provide local affordable childcare for families. The week includes field games, arts and crafts, sports, challenges, visits from the local police and fire service, an inflatable assault course , water games and a little bit of friendly competition.

WHIT17 500 Strong


The Challenge       Lend a hand

A team is needed to help put up the pop up tents for the Young Carers Festival. Approximately 500 are required, but don't worry its not all down to you! The festival takes place Friday 28 - Sunday 30 June, so the support is needed from the beginning of the week leading up to the festival, or even the week before. As a team, you will be fully supervised and fully trained on the tent erection by an experienced member of the team. If you have enough energy, you are also welcome to volunteer over the weekend! Using your budget, they would like you to purchase dough packs, toppings and some additional equipment needed for the cooking skills pizza day, which takes place on the Saturday of the festival.

YMCA Fairthorne Manor

YMCA Fairthorne Manor is a 94 acre outdoor activity centre in Botley, Hampshire. It hosts a range of activities for children, such as climbing, kayaking, archer and den building, as part of the many day camp and residential programmes they offer. Each year, the Young Carers Festival sees 1500 young carers from all over the UK visit for a weekend of respite, friendship and relaxation. In order to run this event, Fairthorne Manor relies on volunteer help.

WHIT18   A Day to Remember


The Challenge  Entertainment

The Craft and Friendship Group meet every Thursday morning. The group has approximately 15-20 people attending. For many of them, this is the only time during the week that they get out. Many of them are lonely and isolated, some don't have a family. The challenge is to work with the Salvation Army and arrange a lovely day out for this group. This would be a real treat that would help with their wellbeing and show them that people care. If you would like to give this group a day to remember, this is the challenge for you!

The Salvation Army

Based in the heart of Portsmouth, The Salvation Army is a church with a large community programme and a passion for making a difference. At their site in Lake Road, they have an Early Years Nursery, supporting those in the community who are lonely and isolated. They also have a cafe, a warm space, a food bank, an employment programme, a family HUB, and a craft and friendship group.

skincare hamperFoodCycle runs a free, weekly community meal in Portsmouth every Wednesday evening, to support local people who may be struggling to access food or who are lonely. This Challenge is for a team of three to volunteer at one of these events, over the summer. The items they need are: high-quality SPF products, suitable for use on both the face and body, sunhats and UV-protection sunglasses.

They connect communities, reducing loneliness and food poverty, working with thousands of volunteers and surplus food to help everyone who needs them. WHIT21  Prizes Galore!

Raffle imageFriends of PICU would love your help in sourcing raffle prizes and gift vouchers for their fundraising events in 2024. They have lots of events taking place this year, and they will use these items to raise vital funds to support the Paediatric Intensive Unit. On delivery of the items, they are happy to arrange a short tour of the PICU unit, so you can hear about the wonderful work they do.

WHIT22   Family Fun Day

Every September, PICU holds an annual Family Fun Day. This is an extremely well attended event, with families who have had a child in the PICU coming from far and wide. It is an afternoon full of fun, entertainment, stalls and music. Your job is to help PICU organise some of the stalls and entertainment, secure prizes for the stalls and, if possible, volunteer to support on the day!

WHIT23 Outdoor Transformation 


The Challenge  Gardening

The Community Library has a small space which is overgrown and needs managing to bring it back to life. Your team will spend the day clearing, weeding and creating a space for all to use. The library plan to start a small gardening group with their volunteers and service users. Once the space is clear, it will allow the group to install some planters and plant herbs and flowers. Perhaps you could use your budget to purchase them some planters and flowers for their project? Project photos > 

YMCA Weston Community Library

YMCA Weston Community Library is based in the heart of Southampton, supporting local residents with access to regular library services, as well as events and groups for all ages and interests. On any given day, you'll find groups such Knit and Knatter, board games and an after-school homework club. A cup of tea and a biscuit is always available and the friendly volunteer team, who keep the library running, welcome everyone in whether a new visitor or an old friend.

WHIT24   In Times of Need


The Challenge   Entertainment

Young Lives vs Cancer would love for a team to provide a welcome gift for each family staying at Jean's House. Things to include are toiletries such as toothpaste, body wash, wipes, and food items, such as biscuits, a jar of coffee or tea bags. These items can be packed in a nice little gift bag or wrapped individually. It's a really nice touch for the families to have them in their room when they first get there. A simple card to say 'we are thinking of you' to accompany the welcome pack would also be a lovely idea.

Young Lives vs Cancer (formally CLIC Sargent)

Young Lives vs Cancer (CLIC Sargent) is a charity that supports children and young people who have cancer, as well as supporting their families. They have a "Home from Home" called Jean's House, close to Southampton General Hospital, where families can stay free of charge for as long as they need to, so they can be closed to their loved one receiving treatment. Southampton is the only specialist hospital in Hampshire for young cancer patients and so the hospital has a wide catchment area.

WHIT25   Happy Days

The charity would like you to arrange an enjoyable day out for those living with dementia. The aim is to have 25 people living with dementia, along with their and a Dementia Advisor come together for a happy, fun day out. You will work with Alzhimer's Society to decide on where to take the group - perhaps a day at the seaside with fish and chips for lunch? You will be fully supported by the charity and carers on this challenge.

Alzheimer's Society

The Alzheimer's Society is working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. They do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future. Dementia is the biggest health and social challenge of our time. There is currently estimated to be 900,000 people in the UK with dementia. Many are undiagnosed and face the realities of their condition alone.

WHIT26 Charity Bash

Enable Ability will be taking part in The Big Charity Bash at Fort Purbrook again this year, on Saturday 1st June. Last year's event had over 400 people in attendance on the day. They would like support with their stall this year with games for members of the community to engage in, as well as having some food treats(candy floss/ cakes etc). They are also looking to run a tombola, so some prizes would also be a great help.

ENABLE ABILITY

Enable Ability is a charity that supports children, young people and adults with mild, moderate and severe disabilities, living in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire. Working in partnership with service users, their families and carers, they provide a range of quality, professional and confidential services.  Their focus is on the care, welfare and advancement of disabled people from the age of five, upwards.

WHIT27  What an Entrance


The Challenge  Gardening

A team of volunteers is needed to help enhance the entrance to their site. Your job is the make it look more enticing. The work will involve cutting back hedge rows and overgrown foliage, as well as making and planting raised beds. In addition, there will be a range of other gardening and maintenance jobs on site to suit all members of the team, including weeding, pruning and stream clearance. The site is accessible and the range of tasks would suit a large team. Project photos >

Youth Options

Youth Options is a charity that supports and inspires children and young people, across Hampshire, to improve their life opportunities for a better future. Focusing on those most in need, they provide vibrant and dynamic activities which are individually tailored to inspire young people to develop their social and emotional capabilities and emotional wellbeing, improve their engagement with learning and to stay safe. They offer outdoor learning, 1:1 and group work, school support, holiday clubs and a woodland preschool.

WHIT28  A Bright Idea


The Challenge     DIY icon


One of the pre-schools and after school clubs based in Andover, at the Scott Centre, need a team to help transform their outdoor space. They have an old fence they'd like turned into into something special, like an interactive wall with tubes for water and stones. There is a fairy garden area they need transforming, as well as some painting to brighten the whole area up! You will work with Youth Options to design something that will brighten up the outdoor space with colour and vibrancy. Project photos >

WHIT29   Car Park Clean Up 


The Challenge  Gardening

The charity recently moved into a new centre. Your help is needed to help make the venue more welcoming and homely. They would like you to purchase indoor plants and large pots to make the indoor entrance welcoming and inviting for the families. You will need to visit to place the pots and fill them with the plants you've bought. They also have a large car park and open space that some volunteers recently cleared. By the time summer arrives, it  may need another tidy up, mainly weeding, clearing, and refreshing stones in the beds. This is probably a half day challenge for a medium sized group. Project photos >

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association is an award-winning charity committed to improving lives, opportunities and outcomes, by providing friendship, advice and a range of some of the UK's best specialist and progressive educational services from the point of diagnosis.

WHIT30 Mystery Adventure of D-Day Portsmouth


The Challenge    Entertainment

You are tasked with organising a mystery adventure tour of Portsmouth and its surrounding areas to commemorate D-Day 80, with the rich history of the city taking centre stage. This is to thank their cohort of 49 volunteers for all their hard work. You can utilise local points of interest such as the D-Day Story, Fort Southwick D-Day Operation Centre and Stokes Bay D-Day memorials in the tour. Transport would be needed - two minibuses, if possible, with a final drop off at the Royal Maritime Hotel for a cream tea or perhaps a 1940's meal experience. They also like the idea of encouraging the wearing of 1940's style costumes or uniforms.

Veterans |Outreach Support

Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) is an award-winning charity that provides a welcoming and relaxed setting, where UK veterans and family members can drop in for confidential social or psychological support. Their mission statement is to meet the welfare, wellbeing and mental health needs of veterans, including spouses, partners and carers. The charity's HQ and main delivery venue is the Royal Maritime Hotel in Portsmouth a familiar, safe and welcoming place for veterans.

WHIT31  Prom 4U


The Challenge   Entertainment

Balloons imageThe 4U youth group would like your help in arranging their queer prom, following the success of their first one last year! It gives young people a chance to enjoy a prom safely and allows them to be their true authentic self. Your job will be to help fund the prom by purchasing decorations, special touches and perhaps a DJ for the evening. LGBTQ Youth Service support queer young people in Portsmouth aged 8-24. They offer three safe space youth groups, a parent support group and 1:1 support. The young people they work with love getting involved in art projects around the city as well as creating their own. Their 4ME youth group is a safe and secure space for 18-24 year olds, offering chill out spaces, informational speakers and sober socials.

Sober socials are vitally important in the LGBTQ community, particularly for those over 18, where they often find gay clubs and bars as their only safe community space. The youth group would like to attend Artypotz (a local pottery painting business) for a session of painting. The venue allows customers to bring their own alcohol to be consumed, therefore in order to make this a safe and sober environment for the young people, you will need to work with the venue to arrange exclusive hire. The exclusive booking would include money for each of them to spend on the items they wish to paint and will be £400 for the evening. This is a great opportunity for you to meet some of the young people and learn more about the group sessions.

Brendoncare have seen the benefits of animal therapy and would like to arrange this for their residents this summer. At the care home, Knighthood, in Chandlers Ford, you will be responsible for creating a fun day for our residents, including visiting animals and an afternoon tea. You will be on hand on to spend time with residents on the day. The Brendoncare Foundation

Brendoncare is a registered social care charity, supporting older people at different stages of their life. Their vision is to transform the culture of ageing by empowering people to live well through the provision age friendly places and services. The community services offer, friendship, fun and connection with over 70 face to face clubs, a range of online clubs based on the needs and interested of members, from social clubs, exercise, information and events. The telephone support service helps keep some of the most vulnerable and isolated people connected.

Your team is needed to support the annual summer children's event, which is scheduled to take place on Friday 12th July, 5pm-8.30pm. You are tasked with sourcing and funding a professional face painter for the event. With the remaining funds, you will donate food for the family BBQ or picnic. Over 200 people will be attending throughout the evening, so if you and your colleagues can spare a couple of hours volunteering on the Friday, they would be delighted to have your support!

The Rainbow Centre is looking for volunteers to help with their Adult Summer BBQ.  The BBQ is an event that brings everyone together with their families, the opportunity to socialise with others whom face the same daily challenges, in a relaxed and fun setting. Do you like BBQing bangers and burgers? If so, this Challenge is for you! You will purchase the food items needed and  help with BBQing at the event. You'll have the opportunity to meet the adult service users and their families. This will take place on a weekday over the summer - date tbc.

The Rainbow Centre for Conductive Education Ltd

The Rainbow Centre is a specialist charity, supporting adults and children suffering with neurological conditions, including but not limited to cerebral palsy, Parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, strokes and brain injuries. Set within a purpose-built facility in Fareham, Hampshire, they provide an intensive, holistic service supporting not only adults and children, but also providing information, advice and peer support to those caring for them.

The Challenge   Lend a hand

Families are invited to attend the charity's coffee morning sessions. These usually take place on a Monday morning between 10am-12pm. Your job will be to use your budget to buy donations of items to support these events. They are looking for food and drink donations and non-spill cups. You are also invited along to help volunteer at one of the coffee mornings. Please note, they do not have a coffee morning during August, so this will need to be completed in June or early July.

This could be a trip to an activity venue, such as the cinema or bowling, with a meal afterwards. You will work with the co-ordinators and plan the trip. You are also welcome to join on the day and meet some of the Young Carers.

WHIT40   Quiz Time

DRWF need support arranging their Summer/Autumn Quiz 2024. The quiz will be based in Portsmouth and held preferably on a Friday or Saturday evening. They would like to attract approximately 72 people (12 teams of six). They would like your help with finding a suitable venue to run the event. The DRWF team can assist with this, using existing contacts. You are also asked to provide 10-20 raffle prizes, as well as helping to advertise the event, covering printing costs for any posters/leaflets. You could also provide materials required to run the event e.g. quiz sheets, pens and raffle tickets. Your team could even put a team together to attend on the day, although this is not mandatory.
